What is Bell’s Palsy
Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes sudden weakness and or paralysis of the muscles of facial expression due to injury of the facial nerve, usually occurring on one side but sometimes occurring on both sides of the face. Though the actual cause is unknown, experts believe viral infections may be the cause of most cases of Bell’s palsy.
Symptoms of Bell’s Palsy
Symptoms include weakness on one side of the face, inability to make facial expressions or drooping facial expressions. Symptoms can last several weeks to several months, but most cases of Bell’s palsy improve. However, a small percentage of patients do not fully recover resulting in abnormal interconnection of nerve fibers supplying the muscles and causing asymmetric and uncoordinated movement during facial expression. This is called Synkinesis.
Diagnosis of Bell’s Palsy
Bell’s palsy can be diagnosed through Clinical Diagnosis, Neuroimaging and EMG/NCV. Dr. Bello can perform EMG/NCV in our office.
Botox Treatment for Bell’s Palsy
Dr. Rey N. Bello, through his experience as a muscle and nerve specialist treating Neurologic conditions, is uniquely qualified to administer Botox to treat the symptoms of Bell’s palsy and has been injecting Botox for Bell’s palsy since the 1990’s.
Patients who receive Botox for Bell’s Palsy can see improved symmetry, more normalized facial expressions and sometimes better pronunciation as a result of relaxing the over engaged muscles. Dermal Fillers are also used in conjunction with Botox
Botox Treatment for Synkinesis
Synkinesis causes uncoordinated and involuntary movements during voluntary movements such as: the eye twitching when the corner of the mouth is moved. Botox has long been considered a very effective treatment for Synkinesis assuming your Physician is qualified enough to know where, and how, to inject.
The goal in treating Synkinesis with Botox is to minimize uncoordinated facial expressions. As a result, the patient can expect more symmetric facial expressions, less involuntary movements and in increase in appearance and function.
Neuromuscular Retraining Therapy for Bell’s palsy
For long suffering patients of Bell’s palsy with permanent symptoms, muscle retraining may help improve quality of life by retraining the facial muscles to produce coordinated movements. Doing this training on a regular basis, under the supervision of a qualified physician, may help diminish or even reverse the symptoms of Bell’s palsy.
Dr. Rey Bello offers one-to-one Neuromuscular Retraining sessions for Bell’s Palsy to improve muscle coordination during facial expressions as well as improve function and minimize discomfort.
